Influencer Spotlight: Andrew Keenan Bolger

One of the great things about working at Obviously is getting to meet so many extraordinarily talented people from all walks of life. Our collaborators are photographers, athletes, artists, moms, scientists- you name it. As many of your know, I spend most of my time outside of Obviously writing for theater, so I was incredibly excited to be put in touch with Andrew Keenan-Bolger (@keenanblogger). Andrew is a true Renaissance Man, a Broadway actor, blogger, and author. I chatted with Andrew about our shared passions and how he manages to stay on top of all of it.

First off, the basics: Name, age, where you're from?

Andrew Keenan-Bolger, age 33 from Brooklyn, NY

How did you get started acting and what lead you to Broadway?

I grew up in Detroit, Michigan and when I was 8 years old, an agent scouted me at a local acting workshop. The agent approached my parents and asked if they’d ever considered sending me out on auditions in New York. On a whim, my parents let me audition for the new Broadway musical, Beauty and the Beast and in a crazy twist of fate, I was cast on the spot. With only a week’s notice, my family had to uproot our lives in Detroit and move to New York. Since then, I’ve gotten to perform in six Broadway shows and acting has become my primary career.

What inspired you to start blogging?  How does it mix in with your other passions?

When I was a sophomore in college, YouTube burst onto the scene. I began vlogging my experience as an actor performing on Broadway and touring across the country, and I started sharing my adventures on other social networks like Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr. I’ve always loved filmmaking and photography, and I think I have a unique perspective coming from a theater background. As performers, we’re storytellers at our core, so whether I’m taking a photo or creating a video blog, I try to think in terms of narrative. I think it’s given me an advantage especially when I’m working with brands. I’m able to not only tell a story, but integrate it thoughtfully into my feed.

How would you describe your Instagram aesthetic?

I’d say it’s youthful, whimsical, playful, and of course, very, very teal!

How do you find all that teal!?

As soon as I started focusing on a teal aesthetic, it seemed like it was popping up everywhere. I think it’s 50% Baader-Meinhof phenomenon (when the thing you've just noticed, suddenly crops up constantly), and 50% following a trend. Especially in New York City, teal has become the new millennial pink. Everywhere from restaurants, to hotels, to public parks have started using teal as a part of their color scheme. My friend Courtney Quinn (@colormecourtney on Instagram) also has a colorful instagram aesthetic and taught me a great trick. Whenever she’s walking around the city and sees a colorful place that would make a good shooting location in the future, she takes a picture of it and geotags it on her private instagram. I’m also lucky enough that my followers have started tipping me off when they spy something teal.

Who takes your photos?  Do you work with a specific photographer?

At first my husband Scott Bixby (@Scottbix on instagram) was my main photographer, but when I started posting everyday, it became a full time job. Most of the time, I throw a travel tripod in my backpack and will use a shutter release remote to take my own photos.

Finally, what is your favorite show on Broadway right now?

I’m a little biased, but I’m obsessed with Dear Evan Hansen. It was written by two of my best buddies, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, but I think it’s completely brilliant and has really resonated with a younger audience.

And here I’ve been trying to get tickets to that for years! :-p
